Facial Cosmetic Surgery Home : Muscle Relaxing Injections

Should you be considering muscle relaxing injections?

Botox™ treatments have the advantage that they are relatively simple to perform and require little or no downtime. Their disadvantages include the fact that they are temporary and will need to be repeated every 4 months during the first year of treatment. However the muscles do relax and most people find that in the second year they need treatments less often.

The frontalis muscle can be selectively weakened by the injection of Botox™. This decreases the depth of the lines across the forehead but care must be taken not to relax the muscle too much as this can cause descent of the eyelid.

The muscles which lie between the eyebrows contract to form a frown. These muscles are also commonly treated with Botox™. This relaxes the muscle and weakens your ability to frown. Shallow frown lines normally disappear with the first treatment; deeper lines usually take several treatments to fade.

The muscle in the crows feet area outside the eye is called the obicularis oculi. When this contracts it pulls the outer side of the eyebrow down and produces the characteristic crows feet lines. Injections of Botox™ into this area relax the muscle, soften the lines and cause the eyebrow to rise.

By selectively weakening the muscles which pull the eyebrow downwards the eyebrows rise- producing a “brow lift”.
